A green, toxic layer of copper carbonate that forms on the surface of copperware and gives a specifically unpleasant taste to food kept in unpainted copper pots. It is the effect of copper oxidation and is found especially in oxidized wines that come from organic plantations that have been treated predominantly with copper sulphate. Synonyms: patina, verdigris, verdigris. (chim.)
