(viticulture) – a set of materials for supporting plants such as vines, which in grapevines can have several variants:
a) unsupported or trailing, as we still find today in Santorini (Greece), those “koulura”: grapevine ropes led in the form of a basket, to survive environmental conditions, strong winds or “kladeftiko”, tying the ropes with complete closure of the circle;
b) self-sustenance, as found in plantations on poor, dry soils, in areas where the frequency of disease is lower due to the microclimate, as in southern France, in Provence, where they are called “gobelets” or in Castilla la Mancha (Spain) where they are called “manchega” or on volcanic soils, as in La Geria and other areas of Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Spain);
c) support on hardwood trees (oak, acacia, hornbeam, hornbeam, mulberry);
d) support on trellises
