DeMatei Winery Gains Increasing International Recognition

The DeMatei Winery once again achieved outstanding results for Romanian wine, earning the titles of Romanian Winery of the Yearand Romanian Wine of the Year for Patima Fetească Albă at one of the world’s most prestigious competitions – the London Wine Competition 2025.

An Impressive Record at the London Wine Competition

This distinction comes with an impressive achievement: six medals – gold, 95 points, and the title Romanian Wine of the Year for Patima Fetească Albă 2024; gold and 95 points for the white blend of the Migală range (2024 vintage); one silver medal; and three bronze medals. And the success doesn’t stop there: the Vintruvian Estates group – which includes DeMatei Winery, Olterra Winery, Histria Winery, and Caii de la Letea – Sarica Niculițel – won a total of 10 out of the 19 medals awarded to Romania in this year’s edition.

More Than Just a Title

The title awarded in London comes from an impressive jury: 10 Masters of Wine, 5 Master Sommeliers, and 10 expert buyers representing a significant share of the UK wine trade.

DeMatei Winery’s performance in London follows a long string of titles and medals won over the past year. Just since the beginning of the year, the producer has earned three gold medals at Mundus Vini, and, thanks to impressive scores (ranging from 89 to 94 points!) from the James Suckling team, DeMatei became the first Romanian winery selected for Great Wines World, the traveling exhibition curated by the renowned critic.

In 2024, among many other awards, DeMatei also received the Best of Show title at the Winelovers Wine Awards (with Prince Matei 2017), and the Grand Gold Medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles for Patima Fetească Neagră 2020 – the same wine also being named Best of Show at Mundus Vini and included in the Top 50 Best Wines at Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada.

Consistency – The Key to a Strong Romanian Wine Brand

From the perspective of Wines of Romania, DeMatei Winery best understood a fundamental truth: it’s not about winning a wave of medals, but about winning something every year, all around the world.

A medal or a title, no matter how important, does not define a national brand. Only perseverance, consistency, and proven excellence year after year can build the international reputation of Romanian wine.

A strong brand is built over time, with patience and effort, by showing year after year that you produce exceptional wine. That you can’t afford to stop for a single moment in this ongoing work of building.

So, in May, you’ll get to know more of the stories that come to life on the 81 hectares of the Tegăneanu and Zorești hills – stories now bottled under names like Rosturi, Migală, Patima, Prince Matei, or Matei. People, wines, events, tasting notes, pairing suggestions, collectible wines, or bottles to share with friends – you’ll discover a little bit of everything in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned with Wines of Romania to find out what truly makes DeMatei Winery special – beyond the medals.
