The Tohani wine region in Dealu Mare, famous since 1773, became the property of Prince Nicholas of Romania in 1930. Here, he met Ioana Dumitrescu Doletti, the daughter of a local landowner, and married her on October 28, 1931, defying the Royal House Statute. The Tohani manor was the setting for their happiness.
In 1948, Tohani became state-owned, and a modern winery was built in collaboration with Bordeaux experts. Now preserved as a museum and wine cellar, it houses over 100,000 bottles of collectible wines. Following privatization in the 2000s, Tohani underwent modernization, replanting vineyards and a factory equipped with cutting-edge technology.
Tohani Romania produces wines under the guidance of South African oenologist Albertus Van Der Merwe, who has contributed to the success of the wines, which have been recognized nationally and internationally for 18 years. The flagship variety, Fetească Neagră, impresses with its complexity and expressiveness, being a key element of the winery. The Tohani Romania portfolio includes numerous successful wine ranges, the latest being the Fetească collection, available in three versions: white, rosé, and red, highlighting the significance of the indigenous varieties Fetească Albă and Fetească Neagră.
