A joint press release from Domeniile Averesti, Casa de Vinuri Cotnari, and Crama Girboiu announces that the three producers are joining forces for a common presence at the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF). 2000 bottles of wine will be tasted at TIFF, and the three wineries will also present other wines at various events and activations generated by the festival.

A fine wine for a fine film

The star wines that will try to seduce cinephiles in the heart of Transylvania are three Romanian varieties – Diamond Zghihara de Averesti, the sparkling Cotnari Millesime – Grasa de Cotnari, and Bacanta special edition – Sarba.

The “Enjoy the Difference” initiative is a commitment by the three wine producers to strengthen the image and place of Romanian wines in the hearts of both local and international wine lovers, through prestigious cultural events such as TIFF. It is also the belief of the three producers that a good wine is the perfect companion to a good movie," the statement reads.

What will be tasted at TIFF?

I am glad that for the second consecutive year, I have managed to bring together three strong producers from Moldova, such as Domeniile Averesti, Casa de Vinuri Cotnari, and Crama Girboiu under the umbrella of an important project, which aims to promote wines made of local varieties both to local and international clients. All three wineries are known for their extraordinary wines made from native varieties such as Zghihara de Husi, Busuioaca de Bohotin, Grasa de Cotnari, Francusa, Sarba, and Plavaia.

Movie lovers at TIFF will have the chance to taste some exceptional wines. From Domeniile Averesti, Zghihara de Averesti, Busuioaca de Averesti and Feteasca Neagra from the Nativus and Diamond ranges; from Casa de Vinuri Cotnari, sparkling wines from Millesime, Colocviu, and ZAZ, Euforia or Naiv Grasa de Cotnari, Francusa, Feteasca Neagra; from Crama Girboiu Sarba and Plavaia Epicentrum, Bacanta special edition, Feteasca Neagra Tectonic, and the iconic wine Constantin,” said Andreea Lica, campaign coordinator, General Manager of 4U Brilliant Ideas.

Film and wine are born from work, passion, and vision

On the occasion of the official announcement of the collaboration of the three producers with this year’s TIFF edition, we asked Crina Dulute-Florea, co-owner of Domeniile Averesti, about how this event is viewed through the eyes of the producer.

First of all, since this is your second partnership with TIFF, how do you see the connection between wine and film?

They are two things for the soul and two things related to mood, both created with a lot of work, vision, and passion, both being received by each consumer with a high degree of subjectivity. Both wine and film have the power to accentuate or change a mood, both encourage dreaming and escaping, pausing and relaxing. My desire is for the wine that represents us, Zghihara de Averesti, to share the joy of living that defines this variety, to integrate well into the atmosphere and resonate with the guests’ moods.

How would you describe this initiative, started last year and continued now, to offer wine to the guests of a film festival?

It is a match made in heaven. Not only is it a wonderful audience that appreciates the cultural dimension of wine, but we are also talking about a festival that has attracted big names in world cinema, actors, directors, screenwriters, or film critics. All of them are people who might not know Romanian wine and who, faced with a few high-value local varieties, can become our ambassadors and can talk to the whole world about the quality of Romanian wine.

Why the focus on Zghihara?

Firstly, because it is a wine suitable for summer and sunshine, a playful, refreshing, and expressive wine. Secondly, because, along with Busuioaca, it says a lot about Domeniile Averesti – not just about the terroir, which is easily discovered in this wine, but also about our effort to save almost extinct local varieties. A huge effort, but one that has brought us nothing but joy so far.

11 days of film and wine

This year, the Transylvania International Film Festival takes place between June 14 and 24 in 15 locations in Cluj Napoca. Between June 15 and 22, the TIFF Lounge in Unirii Square transforms into a conversation space between festival guests and the public. Every day, spectators will have the opportunity to participate in discussions with filmmakers, journalists, or professionals from different fields, who will initiate discussions on the themes of the films in the program. Among the guests are actors such as Jojo T. Gibbs, Bogdan Dumitrache, Dana Rogoz, or artist Marina Voica. Admission is free.

The first weekend is also dedicated to a series of workshops within the Japan Focus – prior registration is required, with all details available on the event website, tiff.ro. Additional details about the festival sections and participating films are available at https://tiff.ro/festival/2024/filme.
