The first warm days of spring bring good news for Romanian wine! The spring edition of the prestigious Mundus Vini competition, held last week, has announced its winners, and Romania proudly boasts a total of 96 medals, including one Grand Gold Medal and 44 Gold Medals. This marks a stronger start to the year compared to 2024, when Romanian wine won a total of 71 distinctions, including 46 Gold Medals.

Romania at Mundus Vini 2025: How many medals, and which wines were awarded?

The most medals were won by Vintruvian Estate, whose four wineries secured 8 Gold Medals and 5 Silver Medals, and by Crama Gîrboiu ,which, with 9 Gold Medals and 4 Silver Medals, was named "Best Producer Romania" for the third consecutive year. Liliac (amb Wine Company) won the only Grand Gold Medal and the title "Best of Show Noble Sweet" with Nectar of Transylvania, the already famous sweet Muscat Ottonel produced using the Schilfwein method, which has strengthened the winery’s reputation since its early years.

Other special awards included:

  • Crama Gîrboiu – 2018 Constantin 60 Anniversary Edition – Best of Show Romania Red
  • Cramele Recaș – Sole Chardonnay – Best of Show Romania White
  • La Cetate Cabernet Sauvignon – Best of Show Romania Red in Retail Markets

"The most personal surprise is that, after four years, Crama Gîrboiu has once again secured the ‘Best of Show Romania Red’ distinction, proving once more the excellence of our wines. (…) We believed wholeheartedly in this wine (Constantin 60) and can confidently say that every bottle truly carries a part of our winery’s heart," stated Crama Gîrboiu in a press release – the only one received so far from producers. We encourage all wineries once again to communicate as much as possible, especially when they have great achievements to be proud of.

Romania shines at Mundus Vini! Congratulations to the winners!

First and foremost, the number of medals won by each winery does not necessarily reflect the overall quality of that producer’s wine, but it does guarantee the excellence of the batches tasted by experts. Every winery has its own strategies and priorities – some focus solely on wine competitions in Asia, others on North American markets. Some have faced difficult harvests, others have had to cut their marketing budgets. Some are experimenting with new wines or approaches, while others seek confirmation of consistent quality.
As a result, each winery submits a varying number of samples for evaluation in different competitions, with proportional chances of earning distinctions. However, together, they shape the global image of Romanian wine.

What truly matters is that Romanian wine has had a strong start to the year, the number of medals has increased compared to last year, we have newly awarded producers and newly launched wines that have been highly rated (Crama Olterra, won Gold for Luturi Negru de Drăgășani and Silver for Scoarțe Crâmpoșie Selecționată), and we have Gold Medals for highly accessible wines (Vinul Cavalerului Fetească Neagră, for example) as well as continued confirmation of excellence for exclusive wines like Constantin.

Medal Rankings by Producer

That being said, broken down by producer, the medal tally is as follows:
