After a long series of firsts, records, oenological and wine tourism achievements, Jidvei adds an important recognition to its portfolio: Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The PDO status is recognized by the European Commission, considering both quality aspects and the specificity of a production region. This designation is not exclusively reserved for wines.

More details can be found in the company’s press release.

Jidvei Obtains PDO Status – A Recognition of the Excellence of Its Wines

We proudly announce that "Jidvei" has been officially registered by the European Commission as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) – a status that confirms the quality of our wines and their deep connection to the unique terroir of the heart of Transylvania.

PDO is a European certification that guarantees the origin, specificity, and quality of a product, confirming that all stages of production, processing, and preparation take place within a well-defined geographical area. For wines, this certification is a promise that each bottle reflects the character of its place of origin – from the soil and climate to the craftsmanship of the winemakers.

"At EU level, 3,640 agricultural products are certified as protected. Wines bearing protected designation of origin benefit from recognized quality, as they are certified to have a strong connection to their region of origin, adhere to specific production characteristics by applying strict oenological practices and specific processing technologies. PDO Jidvei is a guarantee of high standards and our commitment to quality and authenticity. We are honored to create wines that carry within them the essence of the Jidvei Vineyard." – Maria Necșulescu, Deputy General Manager, Jidvei

A Symbol of Tradition and Unique Terroir

PDO Jidvei certifies the viticultural region with a long tradition in vine cultivation, defining it as a strictly delimited area – including the communes of Jidvei, Cetatea de Baltă, Șona, and Valea Lungă in Alba County. These areas have specific pedo-climatic conditions ideal for producing white, rosé, red, and sparkling wines.

The wines are made exclusively from regulated grape varieties, both native and international, corresponding to the wine categories permitted under this classification. Grape and wine production volumes are strictly limited to maximum allowable yields, ensuring compliance with PDO quality standards.

The Jidvei Protected Designation of Origin strengthens the reputation of Romanian wine while confirming the exceptional characteristics of our vineyard’s terroir, which impart an unmistakable character to our wines.

Jidvei wines have been awarded over 1,000 medals at the most prestigious international competitions. In 2023 and 2024, Jidvei was the only Romanian brand included in the Top 100 Best Premium Wine and Spirits Producers in the World, as recognized by Luxury Lifestyle Awards.
