A touch of Belle Époque in every glass
The name of this small vineyard estate from Corcova hides a vast literary history. The Catleya Orchid, which is the symbol of love in Proust’s masterpiece, In Search of Lost Time, today gives the name of the small winery from Mehedinți, established by French entrepreneurs. The plantations are located on the former Bibescu family estate, whose illustrious representative and Prince, Anton Bibescu, was a good friend of the great French writer. As he was also close to the writer Mihail Sebastian, the first two acts of the play The Star Without Name were written at the Corcova estate in 1943. Laurent Pfeffer, viticulturist and oenologist, educated at Bordeaux, discovered Romania in 2003. Four years later, together with his brother, Dominique Pfeffer, and Frédéric Vauthier, the 18th generation of vinicultural owners of Bordeaux, founded a company which holds nowadays about 15 hectares of vineyards in Corcova. Among the varieties replanted on the Bibescu estate, we can find Fetească Neagră, Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and the ranges are called Freamăt (on the label, this word appears in Marcel Proust’s handwriting) and Epopée.
The new hosts intend that their Romanian wines – of Bordeaux quality – developed from manually harvested grapes, provide enthusiasts with a drop of the Belle Époque in every single glass, along with the pleasure of the tasting itself.
