Domeniul Ciumbrud

The favourite wine of the Roman legions and of Mihai Viteazul

At Ciumbrud, the vine tradition dates back to the Antiquity. It is certain that the morale of soldiers from Macedonica V and Gemina XII Roman legions, stationed at Apulum (today Alba Iulia) and Potaissa (today Turda) in the second and third centuries AD, was increased periodically using Ciumbrud wines. Many centuries later, the Saxon colonists have brought the Traminer variety, one of the oenological emblems of the area. Legend has it that the wine produced there was, in his short stay in Alba Iulia (1599–1600), a favourite of Mihai Viteazul, temporary ruler of the Wallachia, Transylvania and the entire Moldavia. Looking into the past, the local viniculture boasts a Napoleon III gold medal, won in 1867 in Paris.
The current company and brand, built on such a vast history, were established 13 years ago and intended to continue the tradition of Ciumbrud wine. Domeniul Ciumbrud represents the achievement of a 3.5 million euros investment, resulting in a modern winery, the vineyards spreading on 150 hectares, and a 3-star guest house, equipped with restaurant and spa.
The varieties grown today at the Domeniul Ciumbrud are Chardonnay, Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Gris, Rhein Riesling, Italian Riesling, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Fetească Neagră, Pinot Noir.
