Zaig Winery

butuc de vie centenară

Zaig is part of the latest wave of small wine producers, focused on quality, which fully contributes to the reshaping of the Romanian wine market. The story of the winery begins in 2013, with the first replantings of noble vines, but the history of the local winemaking is much longer. Apparently, the vines arrived in Teaca, the northernmost of the seven fortresses that delimited the Saxon land, around 1260. The quality of the local white wines is documented since 1666. In modern history, Teaca had 400 hectares of vineyards, confiscated after 1946 and allocated to the local Communist State farm. After 1990, most of the vineyards fell into fallow land.

One of the last remaining Saxons in the area, Zaig Eckehardt, managed to keep alive 1.5 hectares of old vineyards, planted between 1920 and 1925. Then he continued to plant up to 15 hectares, choosing varieties suitable for the area – Chardonnay, Muscat Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, Fetească Neagră, Feteasca Regala, Fetească Albă, and, since 2018, Pinot Noir and Neuburger.

The winery, equipped with modern technology, has a production capacity of 700,000 liters, and the production of wine is handled by the owner, Zaig Eckehardt, and oenologist Cristina Carazan.
