The Little Tyrol on Târnava Mică River
In 2004, Heiner Oberrauch, native of South Tyrol, started a six figures investment on the Târnava Mică Valley, Mureş County, which includes today a modern wine cellar and 32 hectares of mostly replanted vines. Following this reconversion that took place in 2006 and 2010, plantations include local varieties such as Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală and Fetească Neagră and international ones like Gewürztraminer, Muscat Ottonel, Rhein Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Pinot Noir.
Not coincidentally, at this winery, led by Dénes Mihály and owned by a Tyrolean owner from Alto Adige, are vinified both the Kerner white variety, of German origin, and the Zweigelt red variety, from Austria. This is because the Italian oenologist Celestino Lucin, the titleholder of the Winemaker of the Year 2009 awarded by Gambero Rosso Italian wine publication works for Abbazia di Novacella, a well-known South Tyrolean winery where they develop local varietals together with Kerner and Zweigelt. The wines made from these varieties are included in the two ranges of the wine house: Premium and Selection.
Although newly constructed, the gravitational wine cellar bares the shape of a typical medieval, Transylvanian tower. An important criterion in achieving this was keeping the authenticity of the place, while the beneficial terroir – complex soil, very rich in minerals, and a generously sunny and windy climate – makes the Villa Vinèa wines refined and innovative.
