The dramatic wine of Iaşi
An enthusiastic spectator might say that Casa Olteanu’s members have built their wine cellar in a place from where you can perfectly contemplate the Moldovan capital. This beautiful family from the Iaşi fair invented the concept of „dramatic wine” and the premium brand called Gramma (from the Greek word gramma, meaning letter/word).
The founding settlement of the company was laid in 2009, the winery being built on the Provençal model. The old vines are located on a 34 hectares property, which includes patches of forest, somewhere on the Vişan hill, in Bârnova village. From the highest points of the hill, one can spot the green geometries of the winery, the neat buildings from the neighbourhood, and the tall buildings of Iaşi.
With the help of wines produced from the three white varieties – Aligoté, Fetească Regală, and Fetească Albă – the cellar’s masters played a cultural game and obtained ranges with esoteric names: Gramma, Hom, Synon, Metaph, strains: Do, Mi, Sol, but also invitations to understand the wine just as a book: Epic, Liric, Dramatic. Some labels carry Horaţiu Mălăele’s drawings. A limited-edition fruity rosé recently turned up between the white wines’ monocépages and cuvées.
Aligoté gives a distinctive fragrance to the Gramma-branded elixirs. By structure, minerality, and acidity, the wines of this variety – originated from Burgundy and brought to Romania over a century ago – offer peculiar pleasures to the enthusiasts.
