Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea

The Crown’s Domain of Segarcea was established in 1884, part of the 12 domains given to into administration to the Royal House, in order to cover the diplomatic expenses of the monarchy, given the weakened state budget after the War of Independence. Managed by the Romanian Royal House until 1947, the Estate contributed decisively to the replanting of vineyards affected by phylloxera (with an annual production of over one million rootstocks), The vineyard was also awarded the Controlled  Designation of Origin title for this area in the 1920s and, finally, managed to impress all Europe with its wines, winning gold medals at the international exhibitions of the time.
Turned into state farm after WW2 – and, implicitly, having its production-oriented towards volume instead of quality, due to Soviet influence – all along the communist period, the Domain was reborn after its privatization, in 2002. The winery was expanded and brought to contemporary standards, the vineyard was replanted, this time aiming towards high-quality wine production. History, in its beauty, brought the Domain once again among the suppliers to the Romanian Royal House, after all the works in the vineyard were coordinated by Francois Morisson-Couderc, great-grandson and heir of the viticulturist Georges Couderc, who made the plantings in the early 1900s.
Today, the Crown’s Domain of Segarcea can boast over 400 medals gained in international wine competitions, with one of the most impressive wineries in Eastern Europe (and one of the few gravitational ones!), but also with producing high-quality wines out of rare or unique grape varieties like Touriga Nacional, Marselan, Viognier or the signature Tamaioasa roza.
