Domeniile Vînju Mare

A Romanian benchmark on “The Danube Wine Route

This well-known brand from Mehedinţi carries on a millennial tradition. The viticulture in this area has an archaeologically documented history of about 3,000 years, from the time of ancient inhabitants: Scythians and Agathyrsi. According to local legend, the name of the Oreviţa village came from an exclamation of monk-vintners who binged on the wine they produced: O, rea viţă! (Oh, evil vine!) A certain fact is that, over time, the wines of this place were equally appreciated by great rulers of Wallachia and Austrian Empire, since Oltenia area was for 21 years under the rule of the Habsburgs.
Among the vine varieties grown here, we can find Chardonnay, Fetească Regală, Riesling Italian, Sauvignon Blanc, Tămâioasă Românească, Cabernet Sauvignon, Fetească Neagră, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Shiraz. The wines are marketed in ranges such as Domeniile Vînju Mare, Prinţul Vlad and 5 Motive. Domeniile Vînju Mare was included in 2013 in “The Danube Wine Route”, being one of the 12 wine regions in Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Serbia that participate in the implementation of this endorsement of tourism in the Danube area programme, funded by the European Union.
