Love story in a glass of wine

Tohani’s story as a wine-producing area goes down in history, but the first documentation is relatively recent, from 1773. And, if all wines must come with a story, Tohani does not lack historical attire, being the place where Prince Nicolae, the brother of King Carol II, fell in love with Ioana Dumitrescu Doletti. After losing his royal rights because of this forbidden relationship, the prince continued to live with his beloved wife in the vineyard of Tohani.
After the communist period, the 500-hectare estate and winery were privatized in 2000. The new owner, Virgil Mândru, started an extensive program of replanting the vineyards and updating the winemaking facility. An effort that eventually led, in 2012, to acquiring the title of Official Supplier to the Royal House of Romania.
Added to the team since the early years, South African oenologist Albertus van der Merwe, along with local oenologist Marin Ion, managed to fulfill the owner’s dream – to produce modern white and rosé wines, inspired by the intensity and fruitfulness of the New World, and Bordeaux-inspired red wines, less extractive, but defined by elegance and complexity.
