Semi-sparkling wines from the crystalline island
Crama Carastalec is the first sparkling wines winery from the new generation of wineries in Romania. The vines are located on a grand cru slope above Carastelec village, in Sălaj county. This region from the north-west of the country – also called the crystalline island of Transylvania – has all the necessary and indispensable attributes for producing high-quality sparkling wines: cool climate, argilous-crystalline soils. Both the location and the varieties planted (in 2011) on the 22 hectares were chosen to consider the winery’s mission to produce high-quality sparkling wines obtained through fermentation and a long maturation period, at least 20 months in the bottle (Champenoise method). The Carassia sparkling wines range was released on the Romanian and Hungarian markets in May 2017 with EU funds, and the cellar was equipped with ultra-modern technology in 2013.
This was the first winery in the country to produce effervescent, semi-sparkling wines. In the case of semi-sparkling wines, the carbon dioxide results from the fermentation of the must, and the wines have a soft perlage, transferring a maximum of fruitiness and freshness. The brand associated with the semi-sparkling wines is Friza, the wines being vinified from two varieties: Fetească Regală and Pinot Noir. Carastelec also produces still wines in very limited editions, matured in oak barrels, and a Rhein Riesling with a long bottle aging potential.
