Casa de Vinuri Cotnari

New wine cellar, millenary history

Casa de Vinuri Cotnari was founded in 2007 at the initiative of the second generation of the main shareholders of Cotnari SA. Having Ștefan cel Mare as Protector, this is a winery with a history of 2.000 years, first documented in 1448. The company owns 350 hectares of vineyards and two cellars: Vlădoianu and Axinte. The twenty-first’ century viticulture is perfectly illustrated here by plantations made by GPS, with exactly 3.646 vines per hectare. The company headquarter is a mansion built in 1901 by the former Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Romania, Vasile Vlădoianu. For years, the oenophile visitors could contemplate the castle courtyard, equipped with a vintage Japanese garden, the soon-to-be wine cellar, the perfectly geometrical vineyards, and the ancient Vlădoianu cellar – an aristocratic cave, storing huge barrels. Among the varieties grown here, there are: Busuioaca de Bohotin, Tămâioasa Românească, Grasa de Cotnari, Feteasca Albă, Feteasca Neagră. Colocviu, Domenii, and Iris ranges offer complex white wines, dryly vinified, containing high acidity levels. The new producer recently realized sparkling wines of Busuioacă de Bohotin and Tămâioasă Românească.
