Balla Géza

A thousand years of certified wine experience

In 1881, Miniș had a viticulture school, and the wines produced here were medal winners in London and Budapest. The vineyard is attested since 1023, when queen Gisela, wife of Saint Stephen of Hungary, granted Bakonybél’s Benedictine Abbey “eight vines with as many hogs” at the Miniș border. “Aszú” wine, created for the first time here in 1744, from the Cadarcă variety, with the addition of dried grapes, competed with Tokaj wine among the preferences of the Imperial Court of Vienna.
Nearly a thousand years since the first mention of the vineyard, Balla Géza is the proud leading producer from Miniș-Măderat. The company, created in 1999 under the name Wine Princess recently received the owner’s name; they own 110 hectares of vineyards, of which more than 70 ha in bearing, and the winery in Păuliș is the result of an investment of over 1.5 million euros under the SAPARD program.
The most representative varieties are: Mustoasă de Măderat, Furmint, Cadarcă, Burgund Mare, and Cabernet Franc. Under the Balla Géza brand, we also find: Fetească Regală, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Traminer, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Fetească Neagră. Cuvée Aradinum 2009 coupage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Cadarcă is one of the top products. The terroir, fortunately spotlighted by our new range – Stonewine –, includes wines from the vineyards of the highest and rockiest hills with a fertile soil layer below 30 cm.
