Homage to Potaissa
Transylvanian old saying that describes Cluj as an exciting city near Turda is indeed alleged by the quality of the wines produced by this new winery, La Salina. The story of this young Transylvanian brand began in 2011 when two investors from Cluj, Simion Mureșan and Claudiu Șugar, bought a 70-hectare plot near Turda Salt Mine. The old vines were clear-cut, about 42 hectares being replanted with eight varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Muscat Ottonel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rhein Riesling, Neuburger and Fetească Neagră.
The first harvest occurred in 2014, and La Salina’s top wines appeared in the Issa range: Chardonnay, Chardonnay barrique, Rosé (Pinot Noir), and Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir. The name is a tribute to the ancient Potaissa settlement from Dacia, which was first a fort, then a city and eventually a Roman colony. There is also a retail range called Satyr, a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Muscat Ottonel.
Investors’ project also includes a set of buildings for wine tourism: a guesthouse called “Sarea-n bucate”, with a restaurant and 40 lodging places, a gazebo nestled in the vineyard, two ponds specially designed for fishing enthusiasts and a herd of horses offering riding classes and carriage rides on the vineyards. The three million euro investment has grown first roots as the Sauvignon Blanc of Issa range was awarded multiple prizes at major competitions. Connaisseurs assessments also confirm how much this international variety enjoys breathing in the very heart of Transylvania.
