Savu family’s garage
The trend of “garage wines” – artisanal wines, with few bottles produced and small areas exploited – has been in vogue in France for years. In Romania, due to a more unfortunate history (hygiene problems, quality, etc.), such a thing could not even be imagined until recently. Gabriel and Nicolae Savu, two brothers for the village of Ciumbrud, both big vine and wine enthusiasts, produced their first 1,000 liters in 2008. They liked what they got, so they continued to increase their production, reaching 12,000 liters in 2012. The “garage” turned out to be too small, so they built a winery and a cellar in 2015.
And, because some of the most beautiful stories in the world of wine are those in which everything is kept in the family and passed down from generation to generation, the team welcomed Sergiu Savu, Nicolae’s son, in 2016. He’s a student of USAMV Cluj (Agriculture and Veterinary University) and quite passionate about anything production-related.
Today, the Savu family cultivates about 5 hectares, where they planted Fetească Regală, Gewurtztraminer and Italian Riesling. When they find grapes meeting the required quality, they also buy from their partners Sauvignon blanc, Pinot gris, Rheinriesling, Merlot and Pinot Noir. In 2020, Savu Cellars celebrated the first bottled production, labeled under the family name.
