The village of Baia, formerly known as Hamangia, is one of the cradles of the Neolithic civilization in Dobrogea. We do not know when wine started to be made in this place, near the place where the Danube and the Black Sea meet, but we know that at least one winery is trying today, with professionalism and dedication, to put the village on Romania’s wine map.
With a passion for wine inherited from his grandfather, who was forcefully moved to Dobrogea from the vineyards of Nicoreşti, Ion Bălan first specialized in cereals and technical plants, but finally managed to turn his love of wine into business. The target of his investment was the fault between the Babadag plateau and the Casimcea plateau, in an area where the influence of the Black Sea brings coolness during the day and warmth at night.
The modern winery, which he built in 2016, benefits from 45 hectares planted in two stages (2010 and 2014) with Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Fetească Regală, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Although the first bottled wines were put on the market quite recently, Crama Hamangia quickly impressed the audience with its professionalism and quality standard, and promises to become a landmark winery in Dobrogea.
