New world, old world
Boyar Ștefan Negruzzi, considered one of the pioneers of modern Romanian viticulture, is closely linked to the Huşi Vineyard’s cellars’ history in Avereşti. In 1874, he founded a plantation of 30 hectares of vines, then built a cellar with stone arches and 10 caves along a 150 meter corridor, but also a mansion around which he organized an arboretum consisting of several varieties of chestnut, linden, and acacia trees. Educated in the West, Ștefan Negruzzi brought home not only the international varieties of Aligoté and Cabernet Sauvignon but also the first winemaker of the cellar, the French engineer René Faure.
The Avereşti domains became the first irrigated vineyard in the country in the early 20th century. The water from the nearby ponds was captured through pressure and redistributed through tubes to the vineyard, in a gravity-based system.
Thoughtfulness for quality makes the current owner of the winery, Constantin Duluţe, a worthy successor of boyar Negruzzi. He bought the company from Avereşti in 2005 and now has 650 hectares of vines. Indigenous varieties are grown these days at Avereşti, such as Zghihara de Huşi, Busuioaca de Bohotin, Feteasca Regală, but also international varieties such as Aligoté, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are sold under several collections: the Nativ Collection, the HERB Collection, the Trup şi Suflet Royal Collection.
