Casa Isărescu

Elegance and personality

The history of the Drăgăşani vineyard, located on the Olt bank, goes back to Dacian times. Drăgăşani was later an episcopal vineyard, a vineyard of Oltenia’s rulers and the Wallachian rulers (Știrbey). After that, the Brătianu family owned vast lands in the area. But the international recognition of the Drăgăşani wines came with the participation at the international exhibitions in Paris (1880, 1881, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1889), then from Milan (1908 and 1911). I.C. Teodorescu wrote about Drăgăşani wine in 1943: „It is an excellent table wine, the best in Romania – yellow-golden colour, a pronounced fruit taste, a very personal bouquet“.
Drăgăşani’s fame is also related to the Tulburel, a specific long-haul wine, obtained from local grape varieties such as Crâmpoşia, Braghina, Gordanul and Tămâioasa. After the phylloxera attack at the end of the nineteenth century, the vineyards were rebuilt according to the French model. Several varieties from the Bordeaux area have been added to the local varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, Drăgăşani has a geographical location similar to the Bordeaux area, some tens of kilometers south of Parallel 45. The history of the vineyard continued with the Drăgăşani Nursery, founded by the state in 1897, to support the restoration of the vineyard affected by the phylloxera. And in 1936 the Drăgăşani wine-growing resort was born, which boasts the creation of several new varieties, especially by improving the local varieties – Crâmpoşia Selecţionată, Negru de Dragăşani, Novac or the Victoria table grape variety.
