La Sapata Winery

Italian style ecology in Dobroudja

The oldest vineyard of Dobroudja, Sarica Niculiţel, was enriched in 2009 with a new winery. Four Italians, owners and winemakers, Roberto Pieroni, Roberto & Emma Di Filippo, and Andrea Pesaresi, founded Crama Delta Dunării in an area where vines have been cultivated for thousands of years, since Roman times and even during the Greek colonization.
The investment is worth several hundred thousand euros. 25 hectares of plantations and a winery complex of 300 square meters are located in Somova, at the very border of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reservation.
The new entrepreneurs, who consider Romania as their second homeland, promote an organic farming concept, focusing on combining technology with local tradition, in order to obtain quality wines. The sandy soil of the area is processed with horses’ help, with direct involvement of one of the winemakers. The organic viticulture practice is facilitated by the fact that aromatic herbs that have infested the neglected or fallow soil over time have naturally enriched it, preparing it for quality productions.
The varieties cultivated here are Aligoté, Fetească Regală, Muscat Ottonel, Italian Riesling, Rkatsiteli, Sauvignon Blanc, Băbească Neagră, Blauer, Merlot and Sangiovese. Among the representative wines traded under La Sapata brand one can find Băbeasca Neagră, the Aligoté/Riesling coupage and Feteasca Regală.
