A powerful brand in the world
of yesterday and in today’s wine culture
The name Basilescu designates a park, a church, a summer theatre and a metro station in today’s Bucharest. Nicolae Basilescu, Dean of the Faculty of Law in Bucharest, founded the current wine house more than a century ago, and his son, Aristide, Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Bucharest, continued the business until it was nationalized.
The Basilescu family owned the Romanian franchise of the House of
St. Marceaux & Co., founded in Reims almost two centuries before and
they also restored the Bucureştii Noi brewery, turning it into Fabrica
de Şampanie naturală. Family properties were seized in 1949. In 2003,
heiress Colette Basilescu acquired the vineyards and the remains of
the mansion in Urlați, now rebuilt on its old foundations.
A new winery was built in 2008 and a large range of top-quality wines is currently produced from Urlați and Pietroasa vineyards, called Golem, Îngeri din Micul Paris (Angels from Little Paris), Eclipse and Vinicer. The cultivated varieties are Fetească Neagră, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Burgund Mare, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Busuioacă de Bohotin, Tămâioasă Românească, Italian Riesling.
