Located in Bulboaca, Castel Mimi was founded in 1893, at 35 km from Chişinău. It is indeed a unique destination, one of the top 15 world wine architectural masterpieces. Its founder, Constantin Mimi (1868-1935), a graduate of the University of Odesa, and the Superior School of Agronomy in Montpellier, was the last Governor of Bessarabia from the Tsarist period (1917-1918) and later became manager of the BNR (National Bank of Romania) in Bucharest.
The building was completed between 1893 and 1901, after a French project, with the help of Italian engineers and is said to be the first reinforced concrete construction and the only castle in the country. It was visited in 1914 by the Russian Tsar Nicholas II, and in 1925 by Charles II, Prince Heir and future King of Romania. The building was extended in the 1940s-1950s. In the Soviet era, Moldvinprom Bulboaca had 1500 employees, being the largest winemaker complex in the Moldovan SSR.
The current brand was created by the Trofim family, who gradually took over the winery after the privatization of the former enterprise and the founding of the SA Agrovin-Bulboaca in 1998.
The castle, recently restored with the help of 600 qualified workers, under the supervision of the Italian architect Arnaldo Tranti, was opened in 2016 with the participation of 12,000 people. The oldest wine in the winery – whose business is uninterrupted since its establishment – dates from 1933.
